Oregon's national championship in golf is its first in a non-running sport since 1939

Yesterday, Eugene native Sulman Raza sank a putt on the third hole of a sudden death playoff in the NCAA men's golf championship, clinching Oregon's first ever national title in golf.

It was Oregon's 30th NCAA championship in school history. What you might find astonishing though is 28 of those championships belong to the track & field and cross country teams.

As of today, here is the list of all of Oregon's NCAA team championships:

Men's (19)

  • Basketball (1) - 1939
  • Cross Country (6) - 1971, 1973, 1974, 1977, 2007, 2008
  • Golf (1) - 2016
  • Indoor Track & Field (4) - 2009, 2014, 2015, 2016
  • Outdoor Track & Field (7) - 1962, 1964, 1965, 1970, 1984, 2014, 2015

Women's (11)

  • Cross Country (3) - 1983, 1987, 2012
  • Indoor Track & Field (6) - 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016
  • Outdoor Track & Field (2) - 1985, 2015

You'll notice that before today, the last time Oregon won a national championship in something other than running was back in 1939 when the Oregon men's basketball team won the first ever NCAA tournament.
