The 2021 World Outdoor Championships in Eugene took another step forward Friday with news the state of Oregon had formally granted $10 million toward the cost of the meet.
The meet is scheduled to take place at a reconstructed Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.
Local organizers originally had sought $40 million. The request was subsequently scaled back to $25 million, and then $10 million. Funds will come from the state lodging tax, which was raised from 1 percent to 1.8 percent in 2016.
Travel Oregon, the state's tourism marketing agency, voted in December of 2017 to grant the money to Oregon21, the Eugene-based organizing committee overseeing preparations for the meet.
