EUGENE -- The venue always is part of the story for a track meet at Hayward Field, a place that draws people who venerate the sport like nowhere else in the U.S.
The cheers are louder here, the athletes more warmly embraced. Magic happens.
There is a wistful feeling about all of that this year as the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships begin today at the 99-year-old stadium.
When the meet ends Saturday, the stadium does too. The permit for Hayward's demolition has been issued.
The University of Oregon promises something bigger and better will replace it.
