A couple things ...
-- Televising a track meet is a tricky, difficult job. Too much happens at once. And too much of what happens in the throwing, jumping and distance events requires a viewer to pay attention for sustained stretches to appreciate the significance of the key moments in the competition.
Hence, track coverage tends to zero in on races on the track of 1,500 meters or less.
I don't know how to fix this without technology allowing viewers on their couches to pick which events they want to follow.
