Matthew Centrowitz, who won the Olympic gold medal in the 1,500 meters at last summer's Olympics, has withdrawn from the Prefontaine Classic.
The two-day meet begins tonight at Hayward Field in Eugene. Centrowitz had been expected to run in the Bowerman Mile on Saturday.
Centrowitz's absence from the meet's start list was noted on Twitter Friday morning by the website LetsRun.com.
Responding by text message, Prefontaine Classic meet director Tom Jordan confirmed the former University of Oregon star withdrew from the meet on Friday .
Centrowitz, a member of the Portland-based Nike Oregon Project, has had two abductor strains this spring.
