EUGENE -- Oregon coach Mark Helfrich has literally seen Jeff Lockie take thousands of snaps. In three years with the Ducks, Lockie has been a steady face at practice, mostly serving as the understudy of soon-to-be-pro Marcus Mariota.
It was Mariota who always had control of the offense, the firm No. 1 on the depth chart. It brought stability to the team and a consistency for everyone else around. As long as Mariota was healthy, he was the guy.
But now, Mariota is gone and Lockie is the most experienced in a field of quarterbacks that is yet complete.
