Hassan Mead bided his time through most of a dawdling men's 10,000 meters Thursday night at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Hornet Stadium in Sacramento.
With a lap to go, he struck.
Mead closed with a 55.22-second final 400 meters to surge to victory and bring Galen Rupp's eight year reign as USATF 10,000 champion to a close.
Mead, a 2016 Olympian who trains with Eugene-based Oregon Track Club Elite won in 29 minutes, 1.44 seconds.
U.S. Army teammates Shadrack Kipchirchir and Leonard Korir were second and third respectively.
Rupp, who was in the race at the bell, finished fifth in 29:04.
