Galen Rupp and Shalane Flanagan returned to racing after long breaks Saturday at the Portland Track Festival, winning their respective 10,000-meter races held at Lewis & Clark College.
Rupp, the Central Catholic High and Oregon star whose U.S. record of 26:44.36 in the 10,000 was set three years ago, finished the first race of his final season on the track in 28 minutes, 18.29 seconds.
It was the Nike Oregon Project star's first race overall since April's Boston Marathon and his first 10,000 on a track since placing fifth in the Rio Olympics in August. Eight days after the 10K final in Rio, Rupp won bronze in just his third-ever marathon.
