RIO DE JANEIRO – Phyllis Francis placed fifth in the final of the women's 400 meters Monday night in Rio as the United States placed three runners in the top five of a race that was decided by a dive at the finish line.
Francis never quite found the kick from her semifinal heat that propelled her into her first Olympic final, but still overcame a sluggish start to grind out a top five finish, crossing the line in 50.41.
The Bahamas' Shaunae Miller dove at the line to clip the United States' Allyson Felix. Miller won in 49.
