EUGENE a University of Oregon senior Damarcus Simpson didn't set out to be an elite track and field athlete.
He wanted to catch passes.
"Honestly, track was just something I did for fun in high school," Simpson says. "Football was what I really practiced at and what I wanted to dedicate everything toward."
Simpson's journey to Eugene has taken him to from football to track, from LaFayette, Georgia to Chadron, Nebraska to San Jose, Costa Rica, and to the U.S. Olympic Trials.
It all came about because as fast as Simpson is and as far as he can jump, major college football recruiters lost interest when they got an eyeful of his 5-foot-7, 140-pound frame.
