An era ended Thursday on the first day of the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Sacramento.
-- Six-time USATF champion Nick Symmonds ran a competitive 800 meters for the final time, and then waved goodbye to fans in Hornet Stadium from the finish line.
-- U.S. 100-meter record-holder Tyson Gay was eliminated in the preliminary heats of the 100.
-- Two-time Olympian Andrew Wheating failed to advance in the 1,500 preliminaries. Neither did Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano.
-- Galen Rupp's string of consecutive USATF titles in the 10,000 ended.
-- Distance legend Shalane Flanagan made a game bid to win the 10,000 from in front, and ran out of gas.
