Edward Cheserek crushes a world-class field to win the 3,000 meters in Boston

Former Oregon Duck Edward Cheserek continued his weekend tour de force Saturday by kicking away from a world-class field to win the men's 3,000 meters at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston.

Cheserek lay back for much of the race, content to let Spanish runner Adel Mechaal hold a commanding lead in front of a vocal crowc in the Reggie Lewis Center.

Cheserek began reeling in Mechaal -- fourth in the 1,500 at the 2017 World Outdoor Championships -- late in the race. He took the lead with two laps to go.

Ethiopian Hagos Gebrhiwet, the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist in the 5,000, was on Cheserek's heels at the bell.
