As soon as this game was over, I got a message from hythloday saying that Purdue’s coaching staff had rendered half of his film charting project moot. Specifically, the Boilermakers decided to ditch their strict use of man coverage on defense and mix in a healthy dose of zone. This meant some of the manipulations that an RPO heavy scheme like Oregon might use against their standard defense should have been abandoned. While the Oregon staff had mixed success adjusting to the new coverage looks, ultimately the talent gap between these two teams was too great for it to matter much.
