Contrary to certain media narratives, the chief cause of USC’s step back in overall performance in 2023 compared to the year prior was not because the defense got fundamentally worse – it didn’t, if anything the defense got slightly better, although still pretty bad – but rather because the offense had stopped operating at an elite level of efficiency.
