Disciplining a star like Darren Carrington isn't easy, Pac-12 coaches say, but accountability more important

HOLLYWOOD -- Six months into his first head-coaching job, Cal's Justin Wilcox has learned the big difference between life as an assistant, and that as the man in charge.

"Probably the number of conversations that you have," he said Wednesday at the Pac-12's football media days.

Coaches across the conference agreed Wednesday that perhaps the most important conversation a new head coach must have shortly after taking the job is with his team, about standards -- about what will fly, and what will get someone kicked off the team.

"It's the most important time to set the tone," UCLA's Jim Mora said.
