The Oregon women’s basketball team has a first-year guard leading the Pac-12 in assists per game two weeks into the season, which is exactly the sort of impact the Ducks hoped for when they recruited a junior college player to run their offense this season.
Except, the junior college player they recruited to do so, Megan Trinder, is out for the year with a knee injury suffered over the offseason. Into that void stepped freshman Maite Cazorla, a native of Spain whose 6.3 assists per game not only leads the conference, she’s fifth overall in NCAA Division I – and first among freshmen.
