Former University of Oregon distance runner Galen Rupp has changed his training to concentrate primarily on the marathon.
"We're all convinced the marathon is Galen's best event," said Alberto Salazar, who coaches Rupp as part of the Portland-based Nike Oregon Project.
Organizers announced last week Rupp will compete in the 2017 Boston Marathon on April 17.
Rupp, 30, never had attempted a marathon until last year, when he won the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and took the bronze medal at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
He is the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 10,000, and placed fifth in the 2016 Olympic 10,000 final.
