Two-time Olympian Lopez Lomong out-kicked Shadrack Kipchirchir Thursday to win the men's 10,000 meters in the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Lopez, who trains with the Portland-based Bowerman Track Club, didn't lead until home straight of the last lap. He caught and passed Kipchirchir 50 meters from the finish line before a sparse crowd in Drake Stadium.
Lomong covered the final 400 in 54.16 seconds for a winning time of 28:58.38. Kipchirchir was second in 28:59.67. Elkanah Kibet was third.
Molly Huddle held off Marielle Hall for a wire-to-wire victory in the women's 10,000.
