Baseball Recap: Ducks Ground Pilots 1-0

PORTLAND, Oregon— The Ducks survived a pitcher’s duel with the University of Portland, eking out a 1-0 victory Monday over the Pilots at Joe Etzel Field.

Spot starter sophomore right hander Isaiah Carranza (1-0) was sharp, combining with four relievers in shutting out the Pilots. Carranza pitched five innings, giving up only one hit while walking one and striking out four. Freshman righty Kenyon Yovan pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his PAC-12 leading ninth save on the season.

Oregon’s offense, however, was offensive Monday, thanks to hard-luck Portland starter Tate Budnick (0-5), who allowed only one run on three hits while striking out three and walking two in seven solid innings of work.
