Oregon finally knocked off the one team that had been their kryptonite as of late, beating Stanford for the first time since 2011. After losing to the Cardinal in back-to-back years, the Ducks took off in the second half of this one, outscoring Stanford 21-3 over the final 30 minutes to pull away for a comfortable victory.
Turning Point: Late in the third quarter Oregon extended their lead to 15 points on a seven play, 75 yard drive that was set up by a couple of nice completions between Marcus Mariota and running back Royce Freeman for 45 yards. The Stanford offense was playing at a much slower pace, and another Ducks touchdown five minutes later officially sealed the game before Oregon poured it on late.
Key Stat: Stanford recorded a rushing touchdown for the 31st consecutive game, tying them for the second longest active streak in the nation. Kansas State holds the longest active at 45 games in a row.
Oregon MVP: Marcus Mariota - 19/30, 258 yards, two touchdowns. Nine carries, 85 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
No surprise really, as Mariota continues his march to a possible Heisman trophy. This wasn't one of his flashier games, but he still gave the Stanford defense trouble with scores through the air and on the ground.
Stanford MVP: Devon Cajuste - five receptions, 116 yards.
It's hard to single out one performer for Stanford, as the offense tried to go ball-control for much of the game, leading to decreased stat lines for the entire offense. Cajuste led the team in receiving and his 116 yards were easily a season high for the senior receiver.
What's Next?
Both teams face Utah in their next game. Oregon will travel to Utah next Saturday, while Stanford has an open date before hosting the Utes on November 15th.
