The United States won an unexpected medal in short-track speedskating, its first in the sport at these Games. John-Henry Krueger placed second in the men’s 1,000 meters, behind Samuel Girard of Canada, as the rest of the field crashed. In the women’s 1,500 meter race, Minjeong Choi of South Korea won the gold medal.
Skiing in the 26th position — a spot from which winners rarely emerge — Ester Ledecka, 22, of the Czech Republic completed the run of her young life, winning the women’s super-G by 0.01 of a second over Anna Veith of Austria at a point when most thought the race was over.
