Jordyn Wieber had tears in her eyes as she walked into the office of UCLA gymnastics coach Valorie Kondos Field.
“I could tell something was on her mind,” Field said.
Wieber, of DeWitt, who won a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics, was training for the Olympic Games in Rio, taking classes at UCLA and working as a team manager for the school’s gymnastics team because she had turned professional and wasn’t allowed to compete at the collegiate level.
“It’s too much,” Weiber said. “I can’t do school. I can’t train elite and be a part of my team.
