Uzbekistan takes gold in flyweight, light welterweight boxing divisions

Sunday afternoon Uzbekistan doubled its gold medal count for the Rio Olympics, with two boxers taking gold in their respective weight classes.

In the flyweight division Shakhobidin Zoirov took gold via victory by unanimous decision over Russia’s Misha Aloian. Zoirov won all three rounds on one of the judges’ cards, with the other two both scoring the fight 29-28 in his favor. Zoirov took silver in the flyweight division at the 2014 Asian Games, and in defeating Aloian he beat a man who won gold at the World Championships in both 2011 and 2013.

Taking bronze in the flyweight division were China’s Hu Jianguan and Venezuela’s Yoel Segundo Finol.
