USA Wrestling announced Tuesday night that it will not send a team to this year's senior world championships in Serbia in December, bowing out of one of the sport's signature events due to concerns stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.
USA Wrestling president Bruce Baumgartner said in a statement that the national governing body's executive committee reviewed data regarding COVID-19 and solicited athlete input before deciding that "it would not be in the best interest of all involved" to compete.
The decision also prevents American wrestlers from competing independently, a possibility in which some athletes had expressed interest.
