USA Gymnastics on Wednesday released a new Safe Sport policy that more clearly defines types of abuse while detailing prevention efforts.
In drafting its new policy, USA Gymnastics sought the input of athletes, parents, coaches, club owners and outside experts. Survivors of abuse, including one who had been abused by former national team doctor Larry Nassar, also gave feedback on the policy.
The organization’s new policy replaces a year-old version, which clearly defined only sexual misconduct. Since 2017, the U.S. Center for SafeSport has had exclusive jurisdiction over those cases.
USA Gymnastics’ new policy now defines other kinds of misconduct or abuse over which it has jurisdiction, including emotional and physical abuse, bullying and hazing, among others.
