U.S. women win 4×100 medley, nation’s 1,000th Olympic gold medal

History was made in the women’s 4×100 medley relay, with the United States winning by a comfortable margin to collect yet another swimming gold medal. What Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Dana Vollmer and Simone Manuel also accomplished was winning the 1,000th Olympic gold medal in American history, something no other nation has done.

The Americans finished the relay in 3:53.13, nearly two seconds better than the time posted by silver medalist Australia (3:55.00). The Australians edged out Denmark by one one-hundredth of a second, with Canada and China finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

Making their Olympic debuts in Rio, both King and Manuel head home with two Olympic gold medals, with Manuel also having two silver medals to her credit.
