Considering that Sandi Morris has pole vaulted on a bridge in downtown Greenville, S.C., in a mall in Des Moines, Iowa, and on a train station in Zurich, Switzerland, Wednesday’s competition on her homemade backyard runway seemed rather, well, ordinary.
Turns out, it was far from it.
The Morris' homemade facility in South Carolina made an auspicious debut as Morris cleared the top height in the world this year – 4.81 meters, or 15 feet, 9¼ inches.
“Having a pole vault pit in random places is sometimes normal for pole vaulters because we’re crazy,” Morris said.
