Boston-born Stone, 31, won her heat as the No. 1 qualifier. She raced off to a hefty lead before wind and waves tossed significant water into the 27-foot-long vessel.

The win helps her avoid what could be a costly extra race, as the first three finishers skip right to Tuesday’s quarters.
