By qualifying for Rio in the women’s 400m hurdles at the U.S. Track and Field Trials, 16-year-old Sydney McLaughlin became the youngest athlete to make a U.S. Olympic track and field team since the boycotted 1980 Moscow Games.
McLaughlin finished in third with a time of 54.15 seconds. Dalilah Muhammad and Ashley Spencer went one-two, and world bronze medalist Cassandra Tate did not qualify for Rio after finishing in fifth.
If McLaughlin competes in Rio, she’ll be the youngest U.S. track and field Olympian since 1972. Vashti Cunningham, 18, also qualified for Team USA in the high jump last Sunday.
