Switzerland is pursuing a bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics, its National Olympic Committee announced Friday.
No Swiss candidate city has been selected yet. No other cities worldwide have confirmed 2026 bids, either.
Switzerland has hosted the Olympics twice, both Winter Games in St. Moritz (1928 and 1948).
Switzerland’s last bid was for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Bern was one of four candidate cities but withdrew on Sept. 27, 2002, following a referendum in which almost 80 percent of the city’s population voted against funding the Games.
The next two Winter Olympics will be East Asia in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in 2018 and Beijing in 2022, giving a European or North American city an opening to be the 2026 host.
