Susan Dunklee earned a surprise silver medal at the world biathlon championships, the U.S.’ sixth-ever podium finish at a worlds.
Dunklee took second in the 7.5km sprint in Antholz, Italy, matching her mass start silver medal from the 2017 Worlds. Dunklee is the only American woman to earn an individual biathlon worlds medal. The U.S. has never won a men’s or women’s Olympic medal in biathlon.
Dunklee, a 34-year-old, two-time Olympian, finished Friday’s race 6.8 seconds slower than gold medalist Marte Olsbu Røiseland or Norway, the Olympic silver medalist in the event.
Dunklee’s best individual World Cup finish the last two seasons was seventh.
