RIO DE JANEIRO — The starting platform for the marathon swimming competition was damaged by high tides overnight Friday, canceling a scheduled practice on Saturday morning at Fort Copacabana beach.
The women’s 10k race is scheduled to start Monday morning at 8 a.m. ET, and the men’s will begin on Tuesday.
Simone Barreto, the media manager for the Fort Copacabana venue, said officials would remove the platform Saturday and bring in a backup. She did not anticipate it impacting the start of the race in any way.
“There are four parts that are connected, and because of the high tides last night it cracked,” she said.
