PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — A symbolic handshake took place in the early part of the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony on Friday night, as North Korean diplomat Kim Yo Jong and South Korea President Moon Jae-in exchanged warm greetings and smiles at Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium.
While tensions on the Korean peninsula remains frosty and the two countries are still technically at war, the handshake raised hopes that greater dialogue and friendlier relations can emerge from the decades-long saga.
Kim Yo Jong is the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and has been promoted into a position of significance in the regime in recent years.
