ASPEN, Colo. – Even as they sat through a press conference, the podium finishers were surprised the X Games men’s snowboard superpipe ended the way it did.

When the snow started dumping here at Buttermilk Mountain on Saturday night, Ben Ferguson thought event organizers would rake the pipe. Or maybe they’d finish the contest on Sunday.

Instead, the X Games switched the event to a one-run format because of safety concerns.

That put Ferguson among an unlikely trio of medalists. Matt Ladley’s score of 82.33 was enough to hold on for gold, while Ferguson took silver with a 79.
