Skier David Wise has dealt with loss on path to 2018 Winter Olympics

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea – One after another, the losses came, the deaths and near deaths building in a way that left little room for relief.

In the span of a year, David Wise saw his sister survive a boating accident that left her without a leg; supported his wife, Alexandra, through the loss of her father; leaned on one another as they each lost a grandmother and prayed together as they feared their young son might die.

Faced with the most difficult time in their lives, the couple turned to each other.

“Those bad times have honestly just shaped who I am in a way I never could have expected,” said Wise, the defending Olympic gold medalist in men’s freeski halfpipe.
