Serena Williams reached the Wimbledon fourth round by beating a top-40 player for the first time since January, taking out German Julia Goerges 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday.
Williams, eyeing a record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title, gets 30th seed Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in the round of 16 on Monday. She would have played Angelique Kerber in a rematch of last year’s Wimbledon final won by the German, but Kerber was upset in the second round.
Williams, the 11th seed, beat Goerges at Wimbledon for a second straight year after they met in last year’s semifinals.
