Russia takes gold, silver in women’s individual sabre

The women’s individual saber competition came to an end Monday, with Russia grabbing both the gold and silver medals.

Yana Egorian beat countrywoman Sophia Velikaya in the gold medal match, the first-ever all-Russian final in women’s fencing history, and she also won Russia’s first gold medal in this particular event. Winning the bronze medal was Ukraine’s Olga Kharlan, with no American competitor getting past the Round of 16.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Mariel Zagunis and Ibtihaj Muhammad both lost in the Round of 16, with Dagmara Wozniak being eliminated in the Round of 32.
