Russia Sports Minister Promoted to Deputy Prime Minister

Vitaly Mutko, the Russian sports minister who was denied admittance to the 2016 Olympic Games after damning revelations of state-sponsored doping, has been elevated to deputy prime minister of Russia.

President Vladimir V. Putin, who appointed Mr. Mutko minister in 2008, approved the promotion on Wednesday after it was proposed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, according to Russian state media.

In the new role, Mr. Mutko will oversee sports, tourism and youth policy. He is expected to continue in his role as a top executive of FIFA, the international governing body for soccer, which is preparing to carry out the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
