Russia has no plans to bid for 2024 Olympics

Russia doesn’t plan to bid for the 2024 Olympics as it focuses on hosting the 2018 World Cup, sports minister Vitaly Mutko said, according to Russian reports.

Bids for the 2024 Olympics are due to the International Olympic Committee by September. Boston, Hamburg and Rome have declared intentions to bid, and Paris has taken steps in the same direction. Budapest, too, is interested.

In 2013 and 2014, Russian reports said St. Petersburg was a possible 2024 Olympic bidder.

Russia’s first and only Summer Olympics was Moscow 1980. St. Petersburg was an applicant city for the 2004 Olympics but did not make the list of candidate cities.
