LONDON (AP) — The International Paralympic Committee will decide next month whether to ban Russia from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics after opening disciplinary proceedings against the doping-tainted nation.
The IPC says "the current environment in Russian sport — which stems from the highest levels — is such that ... Russia appears unable to fulfil its IPC membership obligations in full."
The IPC expects to decide whether to ban Russia from the Sept. 7-18 Paralympics in the week commencing Aug. 1. Russia would have 21 days to appeal.
Russia has been accused by the World Anti-Doping Agency of running a state-sponsored doping program that was in operation during the 2014 Sochi Games.
