JOHANNESBURG — South African official says Oscar Pistorius is released from prison, put under house arrest.
Manelisi Wolela, a spokesman for South Africa’s correctional services department, confirmed Pistorius’ release from a prison in Pretoria, the South African capital, in a cellphone text message sent to The Associated Press.
Pistorius had served one year of a five-year sentence for killing his girlfriend.
Pistorius' lawyer, Brian Webber, earlier confirmed the release to both NBC News and The Citizen.
The former Paralympic runner will spend his correctional supervision at the home of his uncle outside Pretoria until his sentence is completed on October 20, 2019.
