Poland captured the first-ever gold medal in the mixed 4x400 track and field relay at the Summer Olympics.
Anchor runner Kajetan Duszynski pulled off the victory in a thrilling final 400 meters in which four nations fought for three medals.
Vernon Norwood put the United States into third place with a strong finish down the final bend, but he was beaten at the line by Alexander Ogando of the Dominican Republic.
Ogando and Norwood both beat out Ramsey Angela of the Netherlands from the four-team pack that broke away during the final two legs of the race.
