Caeleb Dressel of the United States missed out on the medal podium in his title defense in the men's 50-meter freestyle on Friday.
Dressel finished the sprint race in sixth place. Australia's Cameron McEvoy won the first-ever medal for his country in the event.
Great Britain's Ben Proud, who was tied with McEvoy as the fastest qualifier, took the silver.
France's Florent Manaudou became the first swimmer to earn four medals in the 50-meter freestyle with a bronze.
