The United States scooped the first gold medal of the 2016 Olympic Games as prodigious talent Virginia Thrasher won the women’s 10-metre air rifle event in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.
The 19-year-old defeated Du Li in the first shock of the competition, as the Chinese athlete claimed the silver medal. Compatriot Yi Siling grabbed bronze as the Games started with a bang at the Olympic Shooting Centre.
