Peter Sagan ceded the yellow jersey to Belgian Greg van Avermaet, whose Team BMC won the team time trial in stage three of the Tour de France on Monday.
Sagan was dropped from his Bora Hansgrohe team with a little more than three miles left of the 22-mile stage. Van Avermaet’s Team BMC won the team time trial in 38 minutes, 46 seconds, four seconds ahead of Team Sky, led by four-time Tour winner Chris Froome.
Van Avermaet, the Rio Olympic road race champion, now leads the overall standings over teammate and American Tejay van Garderen (who has the same time) through three of 21 stages.
