The United States pulled ahead in the Rio Olympics medal count after Day 2 thanks to some impressive swimming performances Sunday night.
China has kept it close early and has the ability to rack up medals in diving and shooting, while Italy recently brought home golds in judo and fencing. As the 2016 Summer Olympics move into full gear, this race for the medal lead is only going to get more intense.
Sunday was a big day for Italy with finals upsets for Fabio Basile in judo and Daniele Garozzo in fencing. Garozzo took on American Alex Massialas in the men's foil finals and took control early to help him bring one of three early golds for his home country.
