Olympic 1500m champion to lose gold medal for doping

Turkey’s Asli Cakir Alptekin will lose her 2012 Olympic 1500m gold medal for doping and serve an eight-year ban, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said Monday.

Alptekin had abnormal values found in blood samples between July 2010

and October 2012 and was provisionally banned for blood doping in 2013.

Countrywoman Gamze Bulut earned silver in the 2012 Olympic 1500m. Bahrain’s Maryam Yusuf Jamal took the bronze.

Russian Tatyana Tomashova finished fourth. Tomashova, the 2004 Olympic 1500m silver medalist, missed the 2008 Olympics due to a two-year doping ban.
