RIO DE JANEIRO — The USA's Marti Malloy, who captured bronze in judo at the 2012 London Olympics, failed to repeat as a medalist after falling to Lien Chen-Ling of Taiwan in the round of 16 on Monday.
It was a shocking loss for Malloy, who many considered a favorite for the gold in the 57-kg division.
Malloy, who many considered a leader for USA judo, was handed the loss by shido — judo’s tiebreaker which factors in rules violations and periods of non-aggression.
Lien had looked promising in an earlier match, but as the 13th seed entering the Olympics, few thought she would contend against Malloy.
