Top seed Karolina Pliskova was ousted in the U.S. Open second round by Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the biggest falling domino on an upset-filled day in the women’s draw.
Garcia, a former world No. 4 who is now No. 50, dumped the Czech Pliskova 6-1, 7-6. She gets American Jennifer Brady in the third round.
Pliskova, elevated to the No. 1 seed after Ash Barty and Simona Halep declined to play for coronavirus pandemic-related reasons, is arguably the world’s best female player without a Grand Slam singles title.
