U.S. champion Nathan Chen leads Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu after the short program at the opening Grand Prix event of the season in Moscow on Friday.
Chen, 18, landed two quadruple jumps but also had two imperfect jump landings. He tallied 100.54, the second-best short of his international career.
Hanyu, looking to win his Grand Prix opener for the first time in eight tries, fell on the final jump of his short, a triple toe loop.
He scored 94.85 points.
